Due to developing technologies, innovative solutions continue being produced in order to meet changing consumer expectations in the construction industry. In recent years, the expanding business world came out with two concepts. First, “nanotechnology”, due to the rapid development it spread its influence in all areas of IT industry. Secondly, developed as a solution to the danger of depletion of world resources “green solutions” . In the development of these innovative processes, the planet ‘s worsening condition, global warming makes itself felt as predicted, emerging issues caused by depletion of natural resources, the negative effects of technology on human health and the efforts to minimize these effects, the requirement of carbon emissions to be kept under control and increasing energy costs was effective. Thus, in developing businesses, as much as productivity and profitability, environmentally friendly and harmless to human health technologies has emerged as an inevitable result. Today, for the health of both the planet and of human beings, the right construction practices has become one of the important issues on the agenda. Nanotechnology Applications The concept of nanotechnology today, not only in the IT sector, has a wide range of application areas such as health and textiles also from cosmetics to food. Nowadays, in each sector that we mention innovation, nanotechnology is also an inevitability to have. By using nanotechnology, materials can be produced in many different configurations. That’s why nanotechnology’s range of applications are virtually unlimited. At the end of the 90s, nanotechnology started to become popular in industry giants such as the U.S., Japan, Germany, South Korea. In Turkey, it began to gain popularity in the last five years. The construction sector is another execution for Nanotechnology. Nanoparticles blended Concrete Nanotechnology application stands out as one of the rising trends in the construction industry in recent years. Most of the work has been done especially on construction materials and concrete. While concrete can become efficient and more controlled by mixing with additives such as nanoparticles, according to the purpose, by varying the active ingredients, it can gain different properties. Nanoparticle additives make it possible to design different concrete structures while the costs are dropping. It also allows the material to be produced with more natural compatibility. In the studies that have been made so far shows that concrete materials which are produced with nanoparticle additives consist of less micro-cracks. The material also covers the cracks that appear by using the nanoparticles, by detecting temperature changes it minimize the deformation. It has been proven that the mechanical properties such as strength and elasticity is improved and less environmental damage has been caused. SMART PAINTS The paint industry is another one that uses nano - technological innovation is intensive. Smart paints’ harm human health less than normal paint. Some kinds of smart coatings can retard fire, self-clean, store energy and contribute to isolation. The new nanoparticles containing paints called “ Smart Paint”, despite being higher priced, by the extraordinary properties offered is already on the market on high demand. “Green Building” Concept As well as Nanotechnology applications “green building” concept also pointed out in the construction industry in recent years. “Green Building” concept is based on minimizing industry’s contributions to global warming and other ecological problems. Only recyclable and non toxic materials are being used in Green Buildings’ constructions. Green buildings, beside materials selection, has many qualities such as efficient use of water, air quality in interior areas and energy consumption. These elements are being made according to certificated eco-friendly standards. Green buildings certification process can be made over international systems such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or BREEAM ( BRE Environmental Assessment Method) and these systems can be applied to all kinds of buildings. WATER AND Energy Efficiency In green building, especially during the winter season studies on energy consumption are continuing in order to prevent heat escaping out of the building. At the same time, by positioning the building according to the sun and placing windows in convenient locations, gaining maximum benefit from daylight and saving energy is planned.
