WHY CAN'T WE EXTEND THE TOURISM SEASON?

The sea, the beach, the sun come first, and then the clean air. I know that the song is not like this. But each summer, each bairam or anytime the tourism has a challenging period, we sing the same chorus. By adding a couple of working days to the beginning or to the end of the bairam holidays, we promote “Let’s come in to the entertainment and vacation and help the wheels of tourism spin.” From the manufacturing and industry side, a few weak objections arise saying, ”How come!”. But nothing really changes. In fact, in order to spin the wheels of an industry by stopping the wheels of others, wastes the country’s total economic output. Extending the bairam holidays up to 9-10 days upsets industry men while tourism investors… Because when a holiday extension is decided a couple of days in advance, there is no time left to search, make deals or compare the local or foreign vacation alternatives. As tourism professionals remark the vacation prices, which approach the European counterparts by the increase of early bookings, their point is not hard to understand. Early decision and planning of the vacations enable the tour operators, airline companies, and the hotels, briefly, the leading actors of tourism, to act in plans and hereby the prices go down. Surely, the decisions to extend bairam holidays, just a couple of days before, increases the vacation costs. Nevertheless, we, as a whole country, have issues not only with the bairams, but also with the tourism as a whole. So to say, couldn’t the governing body that is keen on extending the bairam holidays in the last minute, work on extending the tourism season throughout the whole year? That is the question to be answered and undertaken. Moreover, the key to grow the value for both the tourists and the tourism industry with its 36 sub-sectors, is not extending the holidays but instead extending the whole tourism season. It takes to start from the education system, in other words from the schools. Primarily, the education schedule and the vacations are needed to be customized regionally. Just imagine how starting and ending the semester one or two week earlier for the schools in European side than the Anatolian side would be. Education season is not only important for our country, but also for other countries. The life course is mostly organized accordingly to the children’s education and holidays everywhere. Why don’t we take the same steps with Japan, Germany and many others. What’s the point of flocking the whole country at school doors on the same day? Ministry of National Education’s decision of a simultaneous education schedule means a countrywide clutter and stagnancy periods. Whenever the education is paused all the airline companies, primarily Turkish Airlines, bus lines, hotels, highways, entertainment and leisure facilities get packed up. When the holidays finish, all these remain vacant. This situation is a big issue to be handled simultaneously which creates big losses, waste and burden on the economy. The irrationality here is obvious, but none of the authorities desire a humane life for the people of the country with 80 million citizens settled in seven different regions. In a huge country that is able to enjoy four different season simultaneously in any time of the year, that 80 million go on vacation all together? Why? For example, during the 15-days long mid-term holiday periods, the facilities are packed and prices are high. However, if the mid-term holidays would be scheduled on the basis of the population, geography and other regional parameters of Turkey, the facilities could achieve better efficiency, consistency and higher employment as much as the people who could have a chance of stress-free and cheaper vacations. Such a schedule not only provides benefits for the tourism. There are countless other values in it. The industries such as transportation, stationery, textile and publishing could also achieve improvement, planning, efficiency and other advantages as such. Besides, obligation to go abroad for a vacation due to the fully packed domestic facilities would be diminished. For instance, one night at Uludağ in the mid-term holiday costs 600 TL overnight whereas it is 200 TL just the days before or after the holiday. In the same periods, a one-week long skiing vacation in Bulgaria costs only €250 including the transport. It is just the same for the summer holiday as well. By the beginning of the season a 5-star hotel’s overnight prices go up to 300 TL from 100-150TL for the day before. After the summer holiday, these prices go as low as 70-80 TL. Thus, there is no sense in scheduling the holidays for the students in Rize and Marmaris simultaneously. We already enjoy the pleasure of having holidays altogether during national and religious bairams. There is nothing much to do, as long as the state officials avoid making surprises in the last moment without elaboration. The bairam dates are already known at the beginning of the year. As long as the schedules are declared accordingly to this, the tour organizations and programmes will evolve concurrently. Additionally, improving the tourism industry requires a high quality domestic tourism market. In an environment where your fellow citizens can’t peacefully stay, travel, have fun, and dine, your chances are quite low to attract foreign tourists. Consequently, you can’t go beyond the existing limits of tourism and extend it country-wide. You can’t diversify it and extend the season. Thereby, you will have difficulties in maintaining the efficiency with the tourists seeking only the sea, sun and sand in all-exclusive packages, without stepping outside the hotel, and you’ll have difficulties in upgrading this tourist profile. This trivializes both of your heritage and your culture. In brief; In order to transform this tourism approach, education system is the first aspect to be addressed. It is not very likely to progress merely with the “Tourists are not the customers but guests” heroism. The ones who only pursue the cheap and whatever offered, without demanding nothing more, are not the guests, indeed.
