OLYMPICS; THE EMERGING VALUE

The olympics that are organized in 28 branches is the focus point where health, tourism and regional development projects are shared with different segments of the world. The olympics has an important place for the countries that organize large scale events in terms of being a tool for the prestige policy. Although they are not the kind of events that not every country can easily carry out considering their high expenses, long preparation periods together with the security issues and extra burdens, it is a fact that these big international events have high contributions to the countries’ socio-economic and cultural developments and transformations. While countries aspire such arduous events due to their results such as prestige, respectability, publicity and image affirmations, they gain important experiences in cultural diversity, knowledge and technology transfer, facility construction and management. OLYMPICS PROVIDE COUNTRIES WITH FAST GROWTH AND MARKET EXPANSION According to the Turkish National Olympics Committee Board Member Mustafa Keten, the olympic games and international events should be viewed as platforms where different nations’ synergy and congruity environment is provided and where prosperity and happiness are shared. Such events have a quality for supplying many sectors with investments on project basis and with employment in terms of management through marketing and sponsorship programs via the social media and mainly with TV broadcasts. When the investments and employment numbers allocated for the big events in different countries around the world are considered, the above mentioned point of view can be justified. The olympics and other big events contribute to societies’ prosperity not only as projects for direct income, but also in terms of sectoral growth, regeneration and as an integrated program that enables market growth and sustainability with economic and cultural qualities. A strong olympics candidacy requires a budget of at least USD 20 billion of which USD 4-7 billion is reserved for infratructure work, new facility construction and modernization of the existing facilities, starting with transportation, energy and landscaping. According to the Sports Tourism International Council (STIC), the sports tourist at the olympics spends USD 180 on average daily for event tickets, accomodation and other necessities. Turkey’s budget for the candidacy of 2020 Olympisc that will be held in Tokio was around USD 24.1 billion including the infrastructure and investments. Considering that 10% of this budget belonged to the sponsorships and the private sector, the output that Turkey would benefit from a prospective execution of the Olympics in the country is comprehensive. Because this number is at the equal level of Turkey’s portfolio investment amounts in the years 2011-2012. In the event of the 2020 Olympics being carried out in Turkey, there were projects for the construction or modernization of 415 public facilities and 24 stadiums and the constructed olympics city was planned to be transformed into a business and living space where 600 thousand people could inhabit, permanently contributing the area in the economy. SOCHI HAS ALSO BECOME THE TURKISH CONTRACTORS’ PRESTIGE Although Turkey’s olympics report is not very bright, 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics have created impeccable business opportunities for the Turkish Construction Companies. For the Sochi Olympics that have taken place recently and have been followed by 3 billion people, 15 thousand Turkish workers related to Turkish construction companies have completed 700 thousand square meter of construction with a total pay of USD 1.6 billion. The Turkish construction companies have also made very positive contributuions to the domestic market by purchasing 90% of the materials from Turkey. Among the projects implemented by Turkish firms within the scope of preparation for the olympics in Sochi were, 12 hotels, several apart hotels, residences, shopping malls and a media center to host thousands of journalists who would follow the olympics. PROVIDES PRESTIGE BEYOND ECONOMY Although the costs of the Olympics; USD 8.9 billion in 2004 Athens Olympics, USD 38 billion that the Chinese Government spent for 2008 Beijing Olympics and the cost of 2012 London Olympics that have reached USD 19 billion, sometimes cause questioning of the extent of the returns of these spendings, in countries such as Turkey that need to pay extra attention to its external publicity, it means a lot more than just economic returns. For instance, Tokio having won the right to organize the 2020 Olympics resulted in the increase of the consumer trust index in the country and contributed to the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s plans for reviving the economy. Prime Minister Abe, saying “With the 2020 Olympics, a new and active Japan will be born”, declares that olympics have a lot more important meanings than just sports for a country. Turkey requires projects that support structural transformations and that speed up the branding procedures of the cities for sustainable growth. The possibility of execution of projects such as an olympics that would be held in Turkey, 2023 projects, European Football Championship, Mediterranean Games and Erzurum Winter Olympics is expected to have important impact on the Turkish economy in the coming period.
