According to the "Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Offices" research by JLL (Jones Lang LaSalle), the annual cost of an employee who does not come to the office due to emotional and physical troubles is almost $2,300 for the employer. However, you can eliminate these troubles by making minor changes. We spend most of our lives in offices. Apart from sleep time, we can easily say that we spend more time in the office than at home. Therefore, creating a healthy work environment is one of the most significant responsibilities of employers towards their employees. The results of the research have shown that a series of factors ranging from plants to ventilation play a crucial role in the happiness and well-being of employees. The research has also revealed that the wages of employees and benefits provided to them account for almost 90 percent of operational expenses in a typical office. In such a picture, it is strongly emphasized that all factors that can have a negative effect on the productivity of employees have to be evaluated at the company level. KEEP THE AIR CLEAN The air quality of an office has a direct influence on employees. When the carbon dioxide level of an office environment rises, employees feel tired and have difficulty in thinking easily. This leads to a decrease of almost 10 percent in employee performances. Similarly, according to research conducted in 2011, an effective ventilation system increases employee productivity by 8 percent. Another study conducted in 2000 showed that the air quality of an office is a decisive factor in absenteeism rates. In offices with outdoor ventilation systems, the rate of short-term absenteeism caused by illness is 35% lower than the others. PROVIDE THERMAL COMFORT As the temperature perception of employees depends on their metabolic rate, clothing and personal preferences, the temperature of an office is one of the most challenging issues on which people can reach a consensus. A total of 24 different studies conducted in 2006 came to the same conclusion: The performance of employees working in an office environment with a temperature of 30 and 15 degrees is 10 percent lower than those working in an office with a temperature of 21 and 23 degrees. LET THE SUN COME INTO YOUR OFFICE Although sunshine is regarded as a privilege granted to top executives in many traditional office environments, it is also an important factor which increases productivity. When employees benefit from sunshine, their sleep quality will be higher, which in turn increases their productivity during the day. LET THE SOUND OF SILENCE REIGN IN YOUR OFFICE In an office environment where noise pollution prevails, productivity decreases by 66 percent. Ninety-nine percent of employees entertain the same opinion that unanswered phone calls and speech sounds in the background disturb their concentration. CONSIDER SPATIAL FREEDOM According to the new generation office concept, many corporations have recently turned towards an open office working notion and common shared areas. While this attitude reduces the carbon footprint of the corporation and employees, it also makes them unhappy since they do not have their "private spaces". Do not forget to provide your employees with private spaces when creating open office areas. "GREEN" YOUR OFFICE, LITERALLY Live plants in the office decrease stress levels and increase the productivity. In this context, highlighting the connection between people and other living creatures, Biophilia is a new trend for offices. According to a research conducted in 2001 in the Netherlands, there is a considerable productivity difference between the employees working in the same office, but in areas with and without plants. Employees who work in areas with plants are more active and can efficiently concentrate on their work.
