Amalfi coasts... The region on the coast of Tyrrhenian Sea, a subsection of the Mediterranean Sea, has the ambiance of a typical Mediterranean town. With its steep hillsides, narrow streets and colourful houses, it's worthy of seeing.
L ocated in the south of Naples, one of Italy’s most important cities, and to the tragic ancient city, Pompeii, Amalfi is a very attractive tourism destination. It owes this popularity not only to its natural beauties, but also to its preserved historic fabric. Amalfi, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, lays between Sorrento and Ravello. So called the steep town, Positano, full of multi-coloured houses that look like built open each other, is also located in this region. BEST ACCESS ROUTE Most preferred route to Amalfi is via the flights to Naples. Here, it is noteworthy that there are direct flights to Naples from İstanbul Atatürk Airport. From there upon, you can go on with a rental car. Choosing a small car would be wise in order to drive comfortably in the narrow streets and to be able to fit in the small parking spaces. STARTING OFF FROM NAPLES... One of the region’s transfer hubs, Naples, is also a starting point for a trip to Amalfi coasts. From here upon, you can follow two different routes. One of them is the Capri Island located just across Naples, and the other one is the Amalfi coastline, which is very crooked way… POMPEII, ON THE WAY Pompeii is tragically engraved in since the ancient times. During the Roman Empire era, in 79 B.C., the lava and ashes spilled by the eruption of the Vesuvius Volcano which is in 30-minutes distance, left nothing alive. The residents in the city, around a couple of thousands back then, all turned into stones because of the hot sulphur gas. The city without a single survivor after the eruption is now a tourism destination where you can even see the petrified human bodies. The city had been discovered on 1594, 15 centuries after the tragedy. There are also train rounds to Pompeii from Naples. It takes about 20 minutes. In the city, you can wander 12 hectares of the total 40 hectares area. This field is even more than enough to visualize the entire city. Pompeii on its own deserves almost a full day of visit. SORRENTO FIRST If you started your way down to Amalfi coasts, better get ready to be mesmerized by the gorgeous coasts. Throughout your trip parallel to the coast, while you are viewing the typically warm Mediterranean architecture, you’ll desire to perpetuate these moments by taking photos. Sorrento, another important tourism destination, is in the distance of an hour drive from Naples. The region has two big piazzas. First of them is Piazzo Tasso which is named after the renowned Italian poet Tasso, and the other is Piazzo Antonina, the name of the city’s Saint. You can also have a sightseeing tour around with the train departing from Piazzo Tasso. The population of the town settled on the sea cliffs reaches 100k in the summer. Many cruise lines visit the town thanks to its big port. Thus, there you can meet a lot of foreign tourists with diverse nationalities. POSITANO IS THE NEXT Positano is a colourful town full of bougainvillea and lemon trees. One of the most amazing spots in the region. The town had hosted the movie “Only You”, featured Robert Downey, Jr. And Marisa Tomei, in 1994 and owes much of its fame to it. The region is quite small and in a 45-minute drive from Sorrento. It allows to wander the whole area on foot. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that there are lots of hills and stairs you will climb up and down in Positano, “The Steep Town”. But it offers a great view from anyplace you stay in the town. FINALLY, AMALFI Finally, we arrive Amalfi after the endless twists on the road. Although the whole region is named after this town, we can say that it is quite in the shadow of Positano. The most famous piazzo of the town, Duomo, will help you to get a glimpse of the region. The well-known cathedral built in the 14th century and the Corrale Palace are two of the must-see locations. You could go to the cafes in the piazza to dine. RAVELLO The road to Ravello is a single lane road. It makes the access difficult. In the town, renowned with its classical music festival in summers, the exclusive concerts are performed in Villa Rufolo. Since it’s a small place, it is also possible to meet with the musicians. It should be noted that the famous Amalfi view is present here as well.
