World Bank declared the ratio of people living in absolute poverty to fall back to 9.6 percent at the end of this year. This is the first time the ratio falls below 10 percent. Renewed target for 2030, is to pull it back to 3 percent. Poverty has recently been one of the most important challenges of the globalizing world. Despite the essential improvements powered by technological developments, 14 percent of the global population is still undernourished, while 16 percent lacks access to drinkable water. Following United Nations’ “Millennium Development Goals” program that was carried out from 2010 to 2015, a new program, “Sustainable Development Goals” was initialized in order to eradicate global poverty. The aim is to lower the absolute poverty rate to below 3 percent by the scheduled completion of the program in 2030. What did Millennium Development Goals Program achieve so far? The answer to this question was revealed in World Bank’s October 2015 report of “Eradication of Extreme Poverty and Hunger”. According to the results, global absolute poverty rate is to fall below 10 percent at the end of this year for the very first time. 700 million people, or 9.6 percent of global population, will be living under the international poverty line of 1.9 USD a day. World Bank’s report relates this significant fall in poverty rates to the increase of development rates in emerging economies such as India. In addition, thanks to the education programs such as in Latin America, the increased participation of poor in economically active population had an important role in the global decrease of poverty rate.
